I'll admit it — I booked this trip for the castle.
Bran Castle, Transylvania, the whole legend of it. I had this image in my head of a spooky, gothic country full of fog and superstition. What I found instead was something I genuinely didn't expect, and it's stuck with me since the moment I got home.
The Moment It Clicked
I remember sitting in Brasov's town square with a bright red, Dracula-themed drink in my hand, just people watching. The buildings around the square were colorful, the evening was warm, and there was this feeling I couldn't quite place at first.
It wasn't spooky at all. It was warm. Genuinely, unexpectedly warm.
That's when it hit me — after a while in Romania, you stop looking around wondering about vampires, and you start wondering why nobody told you about the people.
What Actually Surprised Me
Romania is a country of contrasts. Rich history sits right next to communities so welcoming they feel tight-knit even to an outsider passing through for a few days. I picked up on this almost immediately, and it changed how I approached the rest of the trip — less checklist, more conversation.
There was a decision I made early on about where to base myself that ended up shaping the entire experience. Everything — the castle, the mountains, the day trips — became dramatically easier because of it. I won't pretend I figured that out on my own; it took some research before I landed.
The Castle That Actually Lives Up to the Hype
I've been to plenty of "iconic" tourist attractions that turned out to be a letdown once you're standing in front of them, surrounded by crowds and gift shops. Bran Castle isn't one of them.
Yes, it's set up for tourists. But walking through it, you genuinely feel like you're part of the story, not just observing it from behind a rope line. That surprised me more than almost anything else on the trip.
The Part Nobody Told Me About
Here's what I didn't expect going in: a single train ride through the Transylvanian mountains ended up being more memorable to me than most of the official "must-see" attractions on my list. Gray peaks, deep valleys, small villages, winding tracks — eerie and beautiful at the same time, in a way that's hard to describe until you're actually on it.
Nobody put that on my radar before I went. I'm putting it on yours now.
Was It Worth It?
Absolutely. When I look back at my honest ratings for this trip — food, friendliness, safety, value — a couple of categories landed at a perfect score, which genuinely wasn't what I expected walking in. Romania offered more experience for the money than almost anywhere else I've traveled.
If I could do it all over again, I'd give myself more time. Two days was not enough.
