I didn't understand that line until I was standing thirty feet underground, listening to a jazz trio play in a candlelit stone cellar that used to be part of something else entirely, centuries ago. That's when Krakow really opened up for me — and it's not the version of the city most people plan for.

Beneath Krakow's Old Town is a whole second city — jazz clubs, wine bars, restaurants, and historic passages built into centuries-old cellars. It's not a gimmick or a single tourist attraction. Krakow's Main Square is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, and the walk up to the city's iconic castle rewards you with views over the river that are worth the climb alone.
