Why I Gave Sorrento My Lowest "Would I Return?" Score Ever (It's Not an Insult)

I rated Sorrento a perfect 5 on food. A 5 on friendliness. A 5 on safety. And then, when it came to "would I return," I gave it the lowest score I've given any place in this whole guide series.
That probably sounds like a contradiction. It's not. Let me explain.
Sorrento is genuinely beautiful. Cliffside views over the Bay of Naples, giant fragrant lemons everywhere, a main square that feels like the heart of a real Italian neighborhood. None of that is exaggerated. It earns every bit of the praise it gets.
But here's the thing nobody tells you before you book too many nights there: there just isn't a lot to actually do. I'm not talking about a lack of charm — I'm talking about a genuine, honest limitation. Beyond a walk down to the harbor, a stroll through the main shopping street, a few viewpoints, and the food, you run out of "Sorrento things" fast.
The twist is that this isn't really a flaw — it's a design. Sorrento was never meant to be the main event. It's a launchpad. From here, you're a short trip from some of the most famous coastline in the world, an ancient city frozen in time, and an island most people dream about visiting once in their life. Sorrento's real job is to be the calm, beautiful home base for all of that — and it does that job better than almost anywhere else I've stayed.
So when I say "would I return? Barely," I don't mean I regret going. I mean I've already done what Sorrento is for. There's a very specific sweet spot for how many nights actually makes sense here, and going past it is where people start to feel like they're running out of things to see — which is exactly the mistake I want to help you avoid.
