7 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Trip to Ireland

Before I went to Ireland, I had the postcard version in my head — green hills, castles, a pint of Guinness in a cozy pub. That part's real. But there's a lot nobody tells you before you land, and a few mistakes I made that you don't have to.

Here are 7 things that would've saved me time, money, and a soggy afternoon.

1. The Weather Isn't Just "Rainy" — It's Sneaky

Everyone tells you to expect rain. What they don't tell you is Ireland can throw four seasons at you in a single day. I learned this the hard way. There's a very specific packing move that saves you here, and I didn't figure it out until day three.

2. Ubers and Taxis Aren't the Same Game

Rideshares are everywhere and easy — until you're suddenly handed off to a taxi instead. Taxis don't use meters, and if you don't know the rule going in, you can end up overpaying without realizing it.

3. One App Made Getting Around 10x Easier

I tried a couple of different apps for booking trains between cities. One was a genuine game-changer — reliable, fast, and I used it every single day of the trip. The other options I tried? Not so much.

4. Not Every "Must-See" Is Actually Worth It

There's one major Dublin attraction that everyone tells you to book — and I walked away thinking it wasn't worth the time or money. Meanwhile, a completely unassuming pub in a small town ended up being one of the best stops of the whole trip.

5. The Food Surprised Me — For Better and Worse

Irish pub food is incredible, and the portions are generous. But there's one cost that catches almost every first-time visitor off guard, and it's not what you'd expect.

6. Driving Looks Simple. It Isn't — At First.

Left side of the road, roundabouts everywhere, narrow country lanes. It's manageable once you know a couple of tricks — but if you're renting a car, there's one booking mistake you want to avoid making early.

7. My Ratings Might Surprise You

After the trip, I rated everything — food, transportation, safety, value, weather — and a couple of my scores were not what I expected going in. Value in particular caught me off guard.

I put everything — the exact apps I used, the pub and restaurant names, sample daily budgets, packing list, emergency numbers, Irish phrases, and my full city-by-city breakdown of Dublin, Belfast, Galway, and the Cliffs of Moher — into one printable guide.

It's the exact resource I wish I had before I booked my flight.
