Stop Neglecting Your Backyard: Why an Outdoor Pergola Is the Upgrade Your Retirement Deserves
Updated: Sep 19
Be honest with yourself for a second: how much time did you spend this year getting the inside of your house just right? New paint, new furniture, maybe a whole room redone. Now how much time did you spend on the outside?
For most of us, the answer is almost none. We pour everything into the inside and treat the backyard like an afterthought — when it's actually a whole extra living space we're leaving on the table.
The Backyard Is a Living Space Too
That's exactly the mistake I was making, until I added an outdoor pergola. It sounds simple, but it genuinely changed how much of my own house I actually use. With a hardcover roof over your head, you're not at the mercy of the sun or a sudden afternoon rain shower anymore — you've got real, usable shelter outside, not just an open patio you can use on the ten "perfect weather" days a year.
That's the whole point: nature the way it's actually meant to be enjoyed, not the way you're forced to deal with it.
Why a Pergola Specifically
A hardcover roof shields you from sun and sudden rain, so you're not rearranging your whole afternoon around the weather forecast.
It turns an empty stretch of patio or yard into an actual room — add a grill, add a fire pit, add real seating, and you've got a second living room with better views than the first one.
Real shade means you can sit outside comfortably in the middle of the day, not just early morning or after sunset.
It's a genuine upgrade to how much of your own property you actually use — not just how it looks in a listing photo.
Once it's up, the shift happens fast. The grill comes out more. The fire pit gets used on nights you'd normally be parked in front of the TV. You start eating dinner out there without thinking twice about it. Before long you're spending more time outside than in — which, if you ask me, is exactly how it's supposed to be.
What I Use
Here's the pergola that got us there:

Do yourself a favor: stop treating your backyard like storage for a grill you never use. Give it a roof, give it a reason to sit out there, and watch how much more of your own property you actually start living in.
