If you've only seen Cozumel from the cruise ship deck or the waterfront strip near the port, you've barely scratched the surface. I've been coming here for more than 30 years, and the island only really opens up once you get a few blocks away from where everyone else stops.
Here's what most visitors miss — and how to fix it.
Get Off the Main Strip
The waterfront near the cruise port is convenient, but you'll pay tourist prices for average food and souvenirs. Walk just a few blocks back into Downtown San Miguel and everything changes — better prices, friendlier locals, authentic shops, and food that actually tastes like Mexico.
That's the real secret to Cozumel: the island is compact and easy to explore, but almost nobody walks past the first few blocks from the port.
The Water Really Is That Good
Cozumel is a world-class snorkeling and diving destination, and it's not hype. Palancar Reef and Columbia Reef are two of the best spots, and if you want something different, El Cielo ("The Sky") is a shallow sandbar area with starfish and water so clear it barely looks real.
Getting Around Without Overpaying
Taxis are everywhere on Cozumel, but here's the thing — there's no meter. You negotiate the price before you get in, every time. It's completely normal, expected, and can save you real money if you know to ask.
The Bottom Line
Cozumel is easy to love and easy to explore — but the version most tourists see barely scratches the surface. Get off the main strip, go local, and the island opens right up.
